Set along the banks of the Ganges, Rishikesh is known for its spiritual energy and natural beauty. From ashrams and yoga centres to suspension bridges and riverfront experiences, the town offers a unique blend of tranquillity and activity.
Spanning the Ganga at Muni Ki Reti, this iconic steel suspension pedestrian bridge - also known as Shivananda Jhula - is a popular vantage point for photographs and river views. With a length of 750 feet (230 metres), it connects Sivananda Ashram on the west bank with Swargashram on the east. Many well-known ashrams are located nearby, including Sivananda Ashram, Parmarth Niketan, Gita Bhawan, Swargashram and Yog Niketan. Shops on either side of the bridge offer gemstones, jewellery and clothing.

You will also enjoy walking across the suspension bridges, which offer striking views of the rivers.

Situated on the banks of the Ganga, Rishikesh’s largest ghat - a ceremonial bathing place with steps leading to the waterfront - is believed to be the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers. The morning Aarti (prayers) here offers an intimate spiritual experience, while the evening Maha Aarti is an evocative spectacle marked by devotional chants, the sound of drums and bells, and the sight of oil diyas placed in leaf boats and released into the river. Nearby, the 12th-century Bharat Mandir, dedicated to Lord Hrishikesh Narayan, holds immense historical and religious significance.

Located on a cliff in Swargashram, one kilometre from Ram Jhula, Chaurasi Kutia (84 Huts) is where the Beatles - the greatest pop band ever - stayed in 1968 to meditate and compose several songs. The ashram complex houses a former temple, library, kitchen and meditation huts. Most of the buildings are in decay, but colourful graffiti now covers many of the walls. There is also a small gallery and a café. To reach the ashram, visitors must park near Janki Setu on the western bank of the Ganga and walk for about one kilometre.
