Historically referred to as Kashi or Banaras, Varanasi is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Beyond its spiritual significance, Varanasi’s narrow lanes are a treasure trove of traditional crafts, including the famous Banarasi silk. The city is also home to one of India’s earliest central universities, established over a century ago, and an irresistible culinary scene.
Located on the western bank of the Ganga, Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most important temples in India, dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Vishwanatha, ‘Lord of the Universe’. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas (sites where Shiva is believed to have manifested as a column of light), attracting large numbers of devotees each day. Every year during Maha Shivaratri, thousands of devotees gather here for special four-prahar pujas, the Rudrabhishek, a lively Shiv Baraat (wedding procession) and holy dips in the Ganga.

Situated near the confluence of the Ganga and Varuna rivers, Sarnath is where the Buddha is believed to have delivered his first sermon. In Buddhist literature, it is also known as Mrigadaya (Deer Park), alluding to the herds of deer that once roamed here freely. Many of the surviving structures date to the time of Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, who built them around two centuries after the Buddha. Among the most notable remains is the Ashokan pillar, whose Lion Capital - featuring four lions and a Dharma Chakra - has been adopted as the national emblem of India.
