BANDRA FORT

Previously known as Castella de Aguada (Fort of the Waterpoint), this sea fort was built in the 17th century by the Portuguese as a watchtower and defence post, with a freshwater spring in the vicinity that supplied potable water to passing ships. Later occupied by the British, it formed part of the city’s wider coastal defence network and remains one of the area’s oldest surviving landmarks. Its elevated position offers panoramic views of the coastline and the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link, making it a popular setting for sunset walks along stone pathways, weathered granite ramparts and arched sea-facing bastions. The fort has also featured in several Bollywood films and continues to be closely woven into Bandra’s cultural identity.

BANDSTAND PROMENADE

Officially called Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Road, this iconic seaside promenade was developed in the 19th century as a fashionable residential enclave of sea-facing bungalows by the noted Parsi philanthropist after whom it is named. Extending from Bandra Fort to Land’s End, it is lined with rocky shores, seating areas and sea-facing viewpoints, and is frequented by locals for jogging, leisurely walks and sunset viewing. The promenade offers sweeping views of the Bandra–Worli Sea Link and has long been associated with Mumbai’s film industry, with several well-known Bollywood personalities residing in the surrounding neighbourhood.

Visitors can ascend the approximately 130 steps known as the Degrados de Bomanjee (Bomanjee’s Steps), pausing along the way at platforms and mosaic art installations that enhance the walkway experience. The church serves as the focal point of the annual Bandra Fair, drawing thousands of devotees and visitors of all faiths, reinforcing its enduring role in Mumbai’s cultural and community life.

CARTER ROAD

One of the suburb’s most popular social and recreational hubs, this legendary seaside promenade was originally developed on reclaimed land along Bandra’s western coastline. Lined with cafés, restaurants, fitness spaces and open-air seating areas, it is a favourite for evening strolls, casual dining and community gatherings. CAFES OF BANDRA

Once defined by its old-world Irani cafés serving brun maska, berry pulao and endless cups of rich, milky tea, Bandra’s café culture has evolved into one of Mumbai’s most expressive social and culinary landscapes. These historic cafés - including Good Luck Restaurant, Lucky Restaurant and smaller, nostalgic gems in the backlanes -introduced by Persian migrants, paved the way for a new wave of independent, design-led cafés in the early 2000s. Alongside beloved institutions like Candies Cafe, transforming the suburb into a hub for creatives, students, entrepreneurs and coffee enthusiasts. Today, artisanal spaces such as Subko Mary Lodge, Mokai and Yoga House blend specialty coffee, craft baking, elevated, artisanal comfort food, and aesthetic design within restored heritage settings.
