CASTLE MANDAWA

Built in the 18th century by Thakur Nawal Singh Bahadur, the elevated fortress was built to protect Mandawa, which was then a crucial trading outpost on the ancient Silk Route connecting China and the Middle East. Its construction played a pivotal role in attracting a wealthy merchant community that subsequently built the elaborate havelis for which the town is famous. The fort’s design is a blend of Rajput, Muslim and colonial influences. Its arched gateway, adorned with paintings of Lord Krishna and pastoral scenes, sets the tone for richly decorated interiors, showcasing intricate carvings, marble fountains and frescoes. The Durbar Hall, in particular, houses a treasure of antiques and paintings, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the erstwhile rulers The fort has been converted into heritage hotel - Castle Mandawa - to preserve its architectural character.

GOENKA HAVELI

Among the finest examples of Shekhawati’s painted mansions, the Hanuman Prasad Goenka double haveli reflects the wealth and artistic patronage of the Goenka merchant family in the 18th–19th centuries. Designed as a dual-winged residence for an extended family, it features elaborate frescoes that blend traditional Rajput themes with colonial-era influences, including whimsical depictions of Europeans. MAIN BAZAAR

HARLALKA WELL

This 150-year-old stepwell is celebrated for its folklore, intricate craftsmanship and a rainwater harvesting system that once sustained Mandawa’s residents in the arid Shekhawati region. Built as a community water source, the well reflects the ingenuity of traditional desert water management systems, with features like a camel ramp instead of stairs. Visitors can admire its geometric symmetry and chhatri-style pavilions, though caution is advised as the well is deep and lacks protective railings. Locals believe that the well is ‘bottomless’ and making a wish here causes it to come true.

JHUNJHUNWALA HAVELI

Among Mandawa’s most ornate residences, this 19th century mansion exemplifies the artistic excellence of Shekhawati’s merchant architecture. Built by an affluent Marwari family, it is distinguished by a profusion of frescoes depicting mythological scenes, courtly life and early modern influences. Its famous ‘Golden Room’ features exquisite gold-painted frescoes, traditional Rajasthani art and intricate latticework. MURMURIA HAVELI
