Dudhwa National Park

Located in the district of Lakhimpur Kheri, along the Indo-Nepal border, Dudhwa National Park was formerly a hunting ground for the British. In 1958, the area was declared a wildlife sanctuary. It was upgraded to a national park in 1977 and declared a tiger reserve in 1987. The park is known for its unique ecosystem which includes grasslands, swamps and dense forests along with its efforts to protect the endangered Barasingha (Swamp Deer). Visitors can embark on safaris to spot the Bengal tiger, Indian rhinoceros, swamp deer, leopards and many species of birds.

Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary

Set along the banks of the Sharada, the sanctuary offers a landscape of deciduous trees like sal, teak and jamun, open meadows dotted with reservoirs and streams that attract a variety of animals and birds. It is home to over 450 resident and migratory bird species that can be spotted at Jhadi Tai, the premier water body, including the Red-crested Pochard, Mallard, Dabchick, Grebe, Pintail, Shoveler, River Tern, White-eyed Pochard, Spoonbill and many more. You can spot herds of Barasingha (swamp deer) and playful otters, while the Bengal Tiger remains elusive.

Tharu Villages

Home to indigenous Tharu tribes, over 40 villages are located in and around the core and buffer zones of Dudhwa National Park. Prominent among these are Surma, Golbojhi and locations near Belrayan, Bankati and Chandan Chowki. Tharus consider themselves descendants of Rajputana royals, specifically Maharana Pratap, and worship Lord Shiv. They create intricate murals on their mud house walls using clay and cow dung. Guided village visits offer insights into their nature-forward, community-driven, sustainable lifestyles.

Sal Forests
