ITIMAD-UD-DAULAH'S TOMB

MEHTAB BAGH

Located across the Yamuna River, Mehtab Bagh - also known as the Moonlight Garden - is a charbagh (Persian-style quadrilateral garden) with fruit trees, pools, pavilions and tree-lined walkways. Commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan, it was conceived as a vantage point for viewing the Taj Mahal. Its layout draws from the four gardens of paradise described in the Quran. On clear, full-moon nights, the central octagonal tank offers a striking reflection of the Taj Mahal, making it one of the most atmospheric times to visit.

AKBAR’S TOMB, SIKANDRA

This underrated monument - the final resting place of Emperor Akbar and among the few Mughal structures believed to have been commissioned during his lifetime, later completed by his son, Jahangir - departs from the typical domed Mughal form. It reflects the third and most renowned Mughal emperor’s philosophy of Sulh-i-kul (universal peace), expressed through a synthesis of diverse architectural styles. Attributed to Akbar’s own vision, the five-tiered structure brings together Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist and Jain influences, signalling a spirit of cultural openness rather than adherence to a single orthodoxy. Set within an expansive walled garden, the complex is also home to peafowl, deer and blackbuck, lending the site a quiet, natural stillness.
