Also known as Peace Pagoda, this modern landmark was built in 1972 by the Japan Buddha Sangha and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha on the site where the Kalinga war - regarded as one of the bloodiest wars in human history - was fought. The stupa commemorates the mission of peace achieved after that historical turning point when Emperor Ashoka renounced adopted Buddhism with the philosophy of dharma-vijaya (victory through righteousness), resulting in over 40 years of peace and stability. The white, gold-accented structure is adorned with stone panels depicting Buddha’s footprints, the Bodhi tree and an image of Ashoka placing his sword before Buddha.
