Sawai Madhopur Lodge - IHCL SeleQtions

Sawai Madhopur Lodge - IHCL SeleQtions is a heritage retreat amidst the wilderness of Ranthambore, one of India’s most renowned national parks and a kingdom of the Royal Bengal Tiger. Spread over 16 lush green acres, the hotel was built in 1930 as a hunting lodge for the Royal Family of Jaipur. Guests are ushered into this glamorous abode, with the promise of jungle adventures and stories of princely legends. The crescent-shaped Art Deco mansion, with its vibrant colours, geometric lines, chequered floors, verandas and distinctive jalidaar patterns, is a treat for period architecture fans. From the Jaipur coat of arms, royal portraits in the rooms to taxidermy trophiesof wild animals on the walls, every detail evokes a majestic past, with the added luxury of modern amenities. The verdant grounds – home to a 100-year old banyan tree - have a swimming pool, fitness centre, spa, an organic garden and a state-of-the-art conference and banquet venue.

The lodge is uniquely positioned to offer an authentic slice of local culture. Gourmands can savour the robust simplicity of slow-cooked jungle cuisine, which originated during royal hunting parties. Local musicians enthral diners on the lush lawns each evening as anecdotes of Queen Elizabeth II & the Duke of Edinburg – former guests at the lodge – circulate. An unforgettable high tea awaits guests at Awan ki Chowki, a former hunting post now converted into a spectacular dining spot overlooking the forest. The Ranthambore Safari is an opportunity to explore a fascinating forest ecosystem with trails, lakes, pre-historic ruins, ravines and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ranthambore Fort. The resident tigers are diurnal which assures more day sightings of these magnificent beasts than anywhere else in India. Another outstanding experience is a boat safari on the legendary Chambal River, from where guests can safely observe sunbathing gharials (native Indian crocodiles).

Sawai Madhopur Lodge offers a safari vacation steeped in royal charm, where legends of adventure and indulgence come alive in a truly splendid setting.

Great launching spot to see the tigers!
We had a lovely time. The staff is very welcoming and accommodating. Early morning tea before a safari and late tea after the end of day safari - we felt very well taken care of.

Outstanding experience
I was at this hotel for work for two nights. The overall experience was very good. The people, as I expect , from the Taj group were both professional and had a personal touch. They made an effort to know about my requirements and arranged for what I needed. The food is excellent as are the rooms and the facilities. The garden is well maintained and a pleasure to sit in. My one suggestion would be to do with the changes in the attitudes of people in general. A lot of people, possibly visit Ranthambore to undertake safaris. Ranthambore is a Tiger Conservation projects. In light of the fact that people are visiting for conservation, it may be worthwhile to consider not having shikaar, stuffed hunt displayed at the entrance/reception. Further, while photographs of erstwhile monarchs are fine since the property belonged to them photos with dead animals may not be the message that Taj wants to send out/associate with. Just thought I would share this suggestion with you confidentially. I would highly recommend the hotel.
